REBLOG POST!

Movie Review of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Annabella’s blog on Charlie and the chocolate factory reminded me that the original story came from the famous children novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” written by Ronald Dahl. Although I have never read the book, I was interested to know Annabella sought out the origin of the most popular childhood story. But now after reading Annabella’s blog I gave myself an excuse to re-watch both versions and now I’m definitely inspired to go read the book.

I definitely remember my mum buying be the tape of Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I used to watch the movie over and over again as I loved the songs and wished there was a Willy Wonka out there. Which is where Tim Burton’s 2005 remake provided the audience on the background story of Willy Wonka, and his love/passion for candy.

From Edward Scissor-hands to Pirates of the Caribbean I have been a massive fan of Johnny Depp. He is a very talented actor that changes himself to become the character and what the script demands. Depp changed the original role of Willy Wonka into a modern role. Johnny Depp was a very different face to Willy as I always picture Stuart’s Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder as his quirky nature and his talent in singing. Although I believe Depp played Willy Wonka very well and I loved him throughout the film.

It would be the chocolate factory without the oompa loompa’s. As Tim Burton’s film is mostly known as a musical the oopma loopma’s were orange with green hair as an imaginary midget characters. They were the singing and dancing workers of the chocolate factory who took care of all aspects of the factory and Wonka. However in Stuart’s 2005 version the oompa loompas were played by Deep Roy, who is diminutive in size in real life. This created a more believable oompa loompa as they looked no less than humans. However the gadgets and their ability developed from the 1971 version as modern technology and camera techniques were definitely used.

If you haven't already definitely watch both films and try not be as tempted as i was to eat all the chocolate in my house ......
:)
Till Next Time
